Aghiatrias - Epidaemia Vanitatis - (CD Integrated Music Records)
Very powerful soundscapes from the Czech Republic, between neo-classical and post-industrial, Aghiatrias have the early-Cold Meat Industry touch. Their distinct sound is a confrontation between classical compositions and noise generators. The whole is further augmented with samples and vocals, resulting in a fairly ominous sound. Aghiatrias is about the balance between light and darkness.

Astron Planetaldol - Astrol's Kitchen (CD-R self-produced)
What strange recipes are concocted in Astrol's Kitchen? No breakfast fare here. The two french collaborators or chefs, Astron and Planetaldol combine various ambient ingredients and offer us a menu of mellow sci-fi electronica. Despite the track titles, the music does not resemble cooking oil spattering in a pan but rather globules of engine oil floating in zero gravity. This CD is best served at suppertime.

Bak XIII - In Cauda Venenum (CD Urgence Disk)
Electro is not the first thing that springs to mind when thinking of Geneva, Switzerland. However, with their first release "In Cauda Venenum" , the duo Bak XIII offer us their version of chocolates, watches and knives: melt-in-your-mouth melodies, precise electro beats and razor-sharp synthesized vocals. We can find among the assortiment of groovy dance tunes a cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric". Yet, if you look closely at the delicate mechanism, you will find 13 songs by Bak XIII on the label's thirteenth release, Swiss precision indeed!
Black Sun - (CD-R self-produced)
With this 3-song EP, Glasgow-based Black Sun offer us a preview of their new album Fleshmarket. Theirs is a raw, dark, Noise-metal akin to Godflesh and early Neurosis. Black Sun is heavy, suffocating, biomechanically Geiger-esque... and startlingly captivating. There is an underlying malaise in the music, a disquieting sense of impending doom. The muffled vocals are not those of a narrator, but those of his unfortunate victims. A disturbing and beautifully compelling experiment on the human psyche.

Bow Ever Down - (CD-R Syn. Core Productions)
Soft electronics and low female voice: it seems that this American East Coast band have kept a very strong goth influence. The presence of keyboards instead of the ubiquitous goth guitar makes for a gentler, kinder gloom. It is somewhat of a mix of eighties goth-pop with X-Files properties. Peek-a-boo Siouxsie Sioux, the truth is out there...
Collection D'Arnell Andrea - Villiers Aux Vents (CD Prikosnovenie)
Villiers Aux Vents is the re-release of Collection d'Arnell Andrea's fifth album originally released in 1994. The French group wish to relay the sadness and horror of the World War I, the main source of inspiration for this album. Mixing screeching guitars and poppy violins, the result is more melodic than horrific. The voice of lead singer Cloé St Liphard is comparable to that of Cocteau Twins' Elisabeth Fraser however the music as a whole is more medieval in nature. A gothic interpretation of a dark chapter in history.

Contempus Mundi - Savon Karbure (CD-R S.K. Records)
Noise / industrial from Lyon, Contempus Mundi is the solo project of Christophe from Cradovision, also on S.K. Records. Savon Karbure consists mainly of heavy ambient electronics with saturated loops and delicously cheesy B-movie samples. The result is a very introspective sound with a pinch of paranoia for good measure. The perfect soundtrack for a schizophrenic nightmare...
Cyanhide - Dancefloor (CD self-produced)
Cyanhide's dancefloor can be situated in the darkwave caves of the mid-nineties. The sound of this third album would perfectly suit the productions of the now-defunct German label Hyperium. Saturated guitars, machines and samplers are the main ingredients of their solution. Perfectionists by nature, they refuse to bow to the whims of a record executive and believe in doing-it-right-yourself. From live shows to musical lab experiments, they are the master-puppeteers.

The Dead Hours - Dead Girl's Waltz (CD-R Unsigned Bands.com)
Hailing from Sweden, the Dead Hours present us with their interpretation of what the soundtrack for an Edgar Allen Poe novel should be: dark ambient moods with an aseptic industrial streak. The combination of keyboards and guitar overlaid with haunting female vocals creates music of an eerie, foreboding quality. The lyrics, some by Poe and Byron, further enhance this effect. Lock your doors and windows, the storm clouds are gathering.

Final Doll - Prolifere (CDR 3 Pattes)
Do not be fooled by the name, Final Doll is the not the end of an era. It is the first installment of the new project by the Brussels label 3-Patttes, which comprises three 3" CDs. The first course of the project is a collaborative effort between FInalcut , aka Flavien, formerly of We Are Gentlemen, and master(electro)chef Planetaldol. The second and third courses are solo CDs of each artists. For those who relish delicious electronic sounds, this three-course meal comes at a low, sweet price.
FRZ-Imagho - (CD-R self-produced)
Creative collaboration between FRZ (usual suspect of Blue Baboon and Rabbits Sorrow on Aspic Records) and grand guitarist Imagho, two of Lyon’s noteworthy noise-masters. They decided to put a different spin on studio sessions and offer us an ultra-limited edition (25 copies), self-produced recording of each rehearsal/encounter. This release was recorded during one session and is comprised of two long tracks, teetering between ambient electronica and post-rock. Call it a tasty first course…
Gor - Qumran (CD Prikosnovenie)
Gor is Francesco Banchini, percussionist and wind instrument player for Ataraxia. His fourth solo album "Qumran" is a riveting study into the origins of monotheistic religions. Gor takes us on a mystical journey, juxtaposing different biblical texts with ritualistic music, lush orchestration with lone, aching vocals. Having sought his inspiration from the same well, Gor can be compared to Dead Can Dance, even more so than with Ataraxia. A haunting and thought provoking opus.

Grandchaos - La Forge (CD Galaxy)
With his second solo release, Grandchaos from Belgium continues to march to the same beat: early eighties electronics. Grandchaos has been synthesizing voices and notes for over a decade and has managed to create his own esthetic. Unlike Ladytron, his sound is layered and lush, reminiscent of early Trisomie 21, Kraftwerk or even Vomito Negro. Each track on the album is as individual in its ambiance and rhythm as in its storyline. With clean production, La Forge is a dark soundtrack for a sci-fi dancefloor.
Gendel - Prescription: Medicide (CD Noitekk)
Grendel would probably be what the eigth passenger listened to while scouting its next nesting "vessel". Sharpening its claws to the incessant sickly beats, the music invoked images of disease and placentas in the alien's head. Its breaths ressembled the lead singer's acid whispers, its heatbeat - the drums. We survived Velvet Acid Christ and Hoccico, but the sweat on the danceflood will definitely smell sulfur again... dance while ther'es still hope...
Hrsta - L'éclat du ciel était insoutenable (CD Fancy)
The first image invoked by the debut CD of Montreal artist Mike Moya is indeed that of a bright, unnaturally white sky, a sky awash with a nuclear glow. It is eerie, unsettling and inexplicably compelling. Joined by members of Molasses and Godspeed You! Black Emperor as guest musicians, the multi-instrumentalist brings us into a delicately layered and hypnotic musical world. With haunting vocals, tape loops and saw, Hrsta creates a deliciously lonely and comforting gloom. The CD is as much a soundtrack for a long train ride as for afterhours on a park bench. It remains ever intriguing in its complexity and beauty.
Kabbal Karma - In Crepuscular Philosophy Of Inner Accomplishment (CD Ear777)
Despite the black-metalish artwork and typeface, Kabbal Karma gives us a ritualistic industrial music that can be compared to Mortiis. Alix Belial along with his collaborators takes us on a trip down into his universe, right into the core. This voyage is narrated in the three simultaneously-released albums on his own label: Ear777. However, the trilogy's only common link is the producer/master Alix Belial. The records' personalities and touch are distinctly different, varying from industrial to monastic chants and incantations.

Line (CD-R self-produced)
Don't let the Suicide keyboards and beat machine fool you, this ain't New York, this is St-Etienne. The old French mining town has produced more than coal in its days. The members of the now buried Goofball have dug up their guitars and have come back to the surface with a no-wave vengeance. With a Blonde Redheadish sound and creepy underground organs, Line may have struck gold. Their output, unrefined yet catchy, will surely prove to be the motherlode.
Daniel Menche - Beautiful Blood (CD Alien 8)
Daniel Menche, the renowned experimental artist, presents us with his first collaboration with Alien8recordings. The North American musician should be regarded more as a sculptor as opposed to noisemaker. His creations are genuine sound-sculptures, weaving organic, ambient sounds with intense drones, comparable to the likes of Aube. The result is an intricately layered music, powerful, challenging yet strangely familiar.
Milligramme - Anatomy (CD Parametric)
Groove-spasmidic agent / Composition: industrial hip-hop, electronic groove/ Medicinal ingredients: 24 different chemical compounds or groups/ Indications: relief of muscle slackening and motor deficiency in all listed body parts / Dosage: taken as needed, preferably at night or prior to heavy dancefloor activity / Risk of overdose: four times / Possible side-effects: OFS (overactive foot syndrome), Groovitis.
Molasses - A Slow Messe (CD Fancy)
Slow Messe is the third release by the folk-noir Montreal band. Through 26 tracks on 2 CDs (13 songs and 13 instrumental interludes) Molasses offer us a glimpse into their world: the stark beauty of a derelict city, grief, the thirst for redemption. The haunting melodies are contrasted and augmented by, at times chaotic sound fragments, at times the subtlety of silence. In short, everything we have come to expect from Molasses: dark, beautiful and unsettling.
Muckrackers - #0 (CD-R self-produced)
Crossover band from the Metz area, Muckrackers gives us an efficient metal / industrial combination. German lyrics (thanks to the German border proximity?), electronics and agressive guitars. Something like Fear Factory meets Sepultura in the country of Rammstein... As they say themselves: "Muckrackers produce industrial anthems for bombed dancefloors". Actually, a very good CD to play in your car when going to work on a Monday morning...

Off The Latch - (CD-R self-produced)
Toulouse activist Franck Valayer takes out time from his work with the Clarknova webzine, the label Dora Dorovitch & band Telefax to present us with a family project. Featuring his sister Christel, Off The Latch offers old-fashioned electronics with dishy female vocals. Reminiscent of Kitty-Yo's Peaches, Miss Kittin & The Hacker with a hint of Nitzer Ebb...
Passage #9 - Serpents Sensuels (CD-R Isadora)
Between touching pop and french rock, Passage #9 takes us to a melancholic landscape. This band from the "93" (Paris subburbs) can be compared to And Also the Trees, Little Nemo, but also Telephone... Sung in French the lyrics seem also to an important part of Passage #9 adding a poetic melancoly to the cold wave guitars. Nothing really new for a 10 year old band, but a truely sincere CD.

Pine Tree State Mind Control - Transmission #4 (CD-R Voidstar Productions)
Electro terrorism from America, Pine Tree State Mind Control seems to be more into subliminal mind manipulation than melodies. Saturated loops and distorted beats create a real noise conspiracy, delivering unexpected surges of sound, at times linear, at times chaotic. You can definitely meet interesting people at the front row of a Venetian Snares concert...

Plastic Eaters - (CD-R self-produced)
Plastic Eaters' music is built much like a lego spaceship, an array of colourful pieces brought together into a cohesive and fun structure. Based in NYC/Philadelphia their sound is an energetic collage of 2nd generation US punk, metal, loops with a splash of samples. And just like that lego spaceship, it can provide hours of entertainment.

Porn - (CD-R self-produced)
We are Porn, you are Porn, or so they say. This is definitely not a usual porn movie background music. Based in Lyon, Porn are more between industrial and glam rock. Their recipe for pleasure is one pinch of Econoline Crush, one pinch of Stabbing Westward sprinkled with Machines Of Loving Grace. Overall, Porn's music is enegetic and catchy, yet there is an introspective motif flowing though it. Rated-R for Rock'n Roll.

Predella Avant - Carbon Figures (CD Ars Musica Diffundere)
In this post-apocalyptic society, armies of mutants have taken over the world. They march to beat of Predella Avant's drums. We cut back from this grotesque procession and zoom in on our heros, mere carbon figures hidden in the dark, ambient shadows of this wasteland. In the distance echo the anxious voices of those who fell victim to the machines. Predella Avant creates here their MadMax soundtrack for a grim, modern world.
Prikosnovenie - Fairy World N°1 (CD Prikosnovenie)
Not merely a compilation, Fairy World is a musical journey through the vast Prikosnovenie catalogue. The CD explores the many genres this french label has produced over the last 10 years. Intertwining tracks from artists from Australia, Europe and Japan, Fairy World moves us through the various moods and cultures in an almost alchemic way. World music melds into mysticism, medieval into magic. As usual, the production is superb, fully conserving the essence of the work. Furthermore, the CD is presented in a colour booklet.

Psyche - Babylon Deluxe (CD Accession)
The Monsters at the big record companies have jumped on the 80's revival bandwagon and have been churning out crap in order to indoctrinate the masses. Thank the Gods for Psyche who have been doing it right all these years and can still knock you off your ass and back up to your feet with their style and unrepentant electro-pop. They can enlighten any sceptic and convert him into an addict. Who needs Aphrodisiacs when we have Psyche?
The Psychic Paramount - Live 2002: The Franco-Italian Tour (CD-R self-produced)
Recorded during their live performances in the winter of 2002 using nothing but a walkman on stage, the live CD captures the raw and energetic complexity of the Psychic Paramount. The band line-up for this tour consisted of two ex-members of Laddio Bolocko along with renowned percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani. Influenced by the likes of Fred Frith and King Crimson, the Psychic Paramount is what an experimental rock band is all about: insane improvisation.
Punish Yourself - Disco Flesh: Warp 99 (CD Geisha Machine)
Punish Yourself remain one of the pioneers of the french electro-industrial scene. Several line-up transmutations later, they offer us a second album: Disco Flesh Warp 99. Among the 14 tracks, the album features 2 remixes by Dead Sexy Inc (side project of LTNO) and Collapse (aka Amadou Sall, ex-Treponem Pal) as well as a video clip. Despite the title, the album has only two things in common with disco: its energetic, danceable groove and the sexual decadence of the disco era. Electronically lascivious, it lies between Lords Of Acid and KMFDM. Don't be fooled by the dayglow body paint, Punish Yourself are definitely not the Village People on acid.

Red Martian - Glasses Can Not Go To The Puzzle (CD self-produced)
Welcome to the Red Martian Instant Music Factory. Unlike Bugs Bunny's instant foes, there's no need for water, just right-click and enjoy! No messy packaging, no flashy logos, all songs available for your listening pleasure. Red Martian do not to adhere to any particular scene, genre or label. Their shade of red resembles that of My Bloody Valentine and the Stone Roses. Fear not! This intrepid bunch of Martians do not produce a monochromatic sound, choosing instead from a wide palette of languages and instruments to better colour their world.
Rrupt - Traverser (CD Egone)
When East meets West the result can be chaotic. However, Rrupt (alias David Basque) makes it symbiotic. The music inspires images of parallel worlds, one grey and cold, the other bright, hot and dusty. In one a freight train rolls swiftly away from the gathering storm clouds, in the other a slow lazy camel caravan inches along the Gobi desert. It is a soundtrack for Lionel Tran's novel about a monk's voyage through the desert . The booklet includes exerpts of the novel which are further enhanced by the photographs of Jean-Marie Arnouil and calligraphy of Thomas Foucher. Whether in the ethnic ambient influences or in the industrial context , the monk's solitude is almost palpable.
SadMachina - Black and Bloom EP (CD-R self-produced)
One thing you can't miss about SadMachina is the comparison to Nine Inch Nails. The trio from Paris gives us a taste of their "electro rock industrial" world with their fourth EP, Black and Bloom. With gothic ambiance, dark-metal undertones, guitar distortions and an icy female voice, Sadmachina guides us through a 4-track descent into their own downward spiral. Play it loud but play it carefully, this CD might leave you bruised.
The Sand - The Memory Of Dead Romances (CD-R self-produced)
The Memory Of Dead Romances is truly an hommage to lost times. The first CD of this italian project is an intimate and personal work, taking its inspiration from Goth greats Sisters Of Mercy to Cold Wave masters Joy Division. Although the sound is sometime minimalist, The Sand manages to capture the essence of those years. The guitars and keyboards are at the core of the sound, complimented by English and Italian lyrics. A dark , nostalgic and romantic record.

Stardog - Venid A Ver La Sangre Por Las Calles (CD self-produced)
This group of Italian "crooners" probably listen a lot more to Nick Cave than to Paulo Conte. The resemblance to Nick Cave however, is mostly limited to their fashion sense. Their lounge-laced music is much more akin to Sixteen Horsepower (some of the song resemblance is uncanny) and Black Heart Procession with guitar riffs à la The Ex. Even though these boys are not from the Good Ol' South, you can still sense the bourbon and cigarettes in their music.
T.S.T. - Hellektronanism (CD Ear 777)
T.S.T (Tod Sphincter Tod) is another musical concept of Kabbal Karma's Alix Belial, this time in collaboration with Flor Nervous. Created with vintage Atari equipment and obsolete software, and featuring Anthony from Omnicore on two tracks it takes the metal sound to an electronic existence. Also released on Ear777, Hellektronanism is the groovy side of Alix Belial, a mix of low-tech electronics and kitsch EBM.

TV Lumière - s/t (CD-R self-produced)
Produced by Ulan Bator founding member, Amaury Cambuzat, TV lumière is not just an extension of their sound. The record moves like a true Post-rock composition, melodic and melancholic, hopeful and despaired. The songs progressing slowly, towards their inevitable end. We can hear instants of Mogwai, of Ulan Bator and the explosive corrosion of the Swans' Children of God. Staring at the flickering images of emptiness on TV, remember that everything is lost, feel good now.
12 Step Romance (CD self-produced)
"Beer is my favourite 12 step romance" so proudly declare the members of this New Jersey trio. Indeed this record is not recommended for rehab. The unrestrained energy and poppy beats will drive any recovering alcoholic to jump off the wagon straight into the mosh pit. 12 Step Romance is no mental experimental, it is good old fashioned US punk rock. Use with caution, sustained abstinence from these catchy tunes might bring on withdrawal symptoms.
We Are Gentlemen - Anthrax (CD-R self-produced)
Ambient electronics / intelligent techno from Lyon. We Are Gentlemen creates a delicate balance between the harshness of the quintessential industrial landscape and what could be interpreted as the soft sounds of nature, making the electronic organic. The rhythm can sometimes be compared to that of Mick Harris. Overall, a structurally ambient and seamless electronica. They are gentle men indeed.
WorMachine - 3 (CD self-produced)
The name says it all. WorMachine inspires visions of cyber-caterpillars, eagerly milling about. Their music consists of contrasting sounds and rhythms weaved into a groovy sonic web. Formed in October 2000, the three members, featuring one ex Y-Front, combine their respective talents as djs and musicians to create energetic bass and guitar oriented techno. At times aggressive, at times almost-soothing, WorMachine could be described as the french answer to KMFDM...

Whittlesea - Needlepoint (CD-R self-produced)
Solo project from Paul Whittlesea, Clan Of Xymox guitar player since 2001, Needlepoint is not exactly what an ordinary Xymox fan would expect: this is rock n roll. Dark rock n roll, but rock n roll nonetheless. In this album, Whittlesea explores various musical styles while retaining his signature guitar riffs, whereas his voice is sometimes reminiscent of eighties heavy metal sung in a Peter Murphy-ish way... an interesting combination.
Zörglub - Things Are Pickin' Up (CD self-produced)
With their first album, Zörglub have embarked on an emotional, almost religious quest. Guided by the "Holy" Trinity: Darkness, Madness and Violence, they seek to bring us musical salvation through a raw, electronic yet melodic metal. Constantly engaged in a battle of Good versus Evil, agressive guitars are met head-on by dark and moody keyboards. We find ourselves confronted with the apocalyptic imagery and sound invoked by this passionate and fierce struggle. If this first record is an indication of the storm that is brewing, things for Zörglub are definitely picking up.
